Nuclear and Radiation Physics

The Research Centre of the Department of Physics offers research in the field of Radiation Physics. The subject of radiation physics concerns the sources of radiation, radiation properties and effects on the environment, measurement and use of radiation in different lines of work. An important part of radiation physics is the medically oriented activities where an expertise in physics is needed to safely carry out e.g. radiation therapy or diagnostics using X-rays and radioactive substances. Medical linear accelerators have become the backbone of radiation therapy for cancer worldwide. Roughly half of all cancer patients receive radiation therapy primarily from the rays generated by a linear accelerator which outputs radiations at the rate of 5-15 MeV. Two students are pursuing research in this area.

1. Candidate Name: Noufal MP

Thrust area of research: Studies on volumetric modulated high energy X-ray arc from Linear Accelerator.

The high energetic volumetric modulated arc X-rays from Linear accelerator is produced. The characteristics of these VMAT X-rays were studied in both phantom and different clinical situations. The properties of VMAT are studied in both CT and CBCT images. The Effect of couch and collimator angular variations of the Linear Accelerator on dose form these X-rays are also studied.

Papers Published:

i) Analysis of Influence of Errors in Angular Settings of Couch and Collimator on the Dosimetric and Radiobiological Parameters in VMAT Plans, Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences 48 (2017) 166-177

ii) Analysis of Dosimetric Impacts of Cone Beam Computed Tomography–Based Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy Planning, Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences 47 (2016) 160-170

2. Candidate Name: Niyas P

Thrust area of research: Studies on various dosimetric aspects of Intensity Modulated Bremsstrahlung X-rays.

Dosimetric studies of high energy Bremsstrahlung X-rays are studied by using various radiation detectors. A simple and effective technique is introduced to minimize the leakage and scattered radiation in cancer treatment using Linear Accelerator. This work is aimed to improve the quality of radiation treatment by considering all practical dosimetric constraints.
